Leaving any position or career to start again is always a scary and stressful position to find oneself. After losing most of his business investments and interests in the devastating wrath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans Native Dr. Mark McKenna sought to rebuild and restart his life and career.
Growing up in the Big Easy, Dr. McKenna saw first-hand what community involvement and exemplary patient-care looked like while working alongside his father – an esteemed physician with his own medical practice. It is during this time that Dr. McKenna cultivated his ideology of compassionate patient-care and an industrious entrepreneurial spirit.
Career and Entrepreneurship
While studying in Medical School, Dr. McKenna would work extra hours within the prison system giving physicals to inmates. He worked tirelessly to raise the capital he needed for financing his first entrepreneurial endeavor – real estate. Dr. McKenna was able to amass between $4-5 million dollars in this endeavor, however, after Hurricane Katrina hit, he lost a great deal of his investment and business interests. Starting from the ground up again, Dr. Mark McKenna, along with his family, moved to Atlanta, Georgia to rebuild his life and career by offering advanced health, wellness, and aesthetics to the community of Buckhead, GA.
Now, after relocating his family and practice to Atlanta, he extended his philanthropy and wealth of knowledge to improve the outlook, aesthetics, and health of Buckhead residents. In 2007, using the money from the sale of his real estate business and the principles he learned while practicing medicine within his father’s private practice in New Orleans, Dr. McKenna created Shape Med. Shape Med is a wellness and aesthetics medical center based in Georgia. Dr. McKenna developed and cultivated a healthy client base within the community and eventually sold this practice to Life Time Fitness. Contracted as the company’s national medical director, Dr. McKenna later resigned after its eventual corporate sale and reassignment to two large-scale private equity firms. Disenchanted with the bureaucracy of a large chain, Dr. Mark McKenna resigned and spent the remaining year-and-a-half honoring his contractual non-competing agreement. Dr. McKenna busied himself collaborating and preparing his new endeavor while traveling and enjoying the subsequent birth of his first child.
Future of Medical Aesthetics
During this time, Dr. McKenna developed the basis of his new company. Dr. McKenna sought to offer products and services to help enhance his clients’ appearance, self-confidence, and overall wellness in a convenient and easily accessible manner.
Consequently, OVME was created. Pronounced ” of me”, OVME was opened March 2018 in the Buckhead district of Atlanta, Georgia. Aligned with his philosophy of a patient-centered experience, the innovations of this new platform will allow a wider range of clients to enjoy his services while enhancing the experiences and outcomes of his existing client base. Using Dr. Mark McKenna’s extensive experience and passion for the field, he has developed a platform to serve patients with superior care.
From the rubble of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Mark McKenna rebuilt his life, businesses, and contributed to the rebuilding of New Orleans efforts. Dr. McKenna helped to rebuild his former community by initiating construction aimed at helping to provide low and middle-income families, displaced and ravished by the hurricane, with affordable housing. Dr. McKenna’s generosity hasn’t wavered since that time, as he (throughout his company – OVME’s operation) has been actively donating to charities; such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Through the devastation of Katrina, to the establishment of a ground-breaking aesthetic medical procedure platform, Dr. Mark McKenna has managed to not only fulfill but embody the American spirit of philanthropy and entrepreneurship.
