Before their arrest, Lacey was the executive editor of Village Voice Media newspaper and Larkin its CEO. Joe Arpaio ordered the agents of Maricopa County Selective Enforcement Unit to arrest and imprison Lacey and Larkin for exposing information on a grand jury investigation.
An article had been published by Lacey and Larking about the study of the grand jury, although they did not know the grand jury was probing them.
However, before their arrest, the two owners had occasionally been colliding with Arpaio for writing against injustice to the minority groups. During this time, newspapers did not write anything against the sheriff’s department. However, the work of Lacey and Larkin inspired them to write about Arpaio’s activities. In fact, they based their articles on the writings of Lacey and Larkin. The news spread to almost every part of the United States.
Before 2011, instances concerning mistreatment of the prisoners and the immigrant groups were not openly addressed. However, from this time, details emerged on Arpaio’s orders against women and the poor living conditions of inmates at Tent City. Increasing covering on aggressive tactics used to maintain law and order by Arpaio did not auger well with him.
However, when Arpaio was charged with violation of the Latino’s rights and those of other immigrants, conditions of the prisoners of Tent City came to the knowledge of many people.
Despite the Sheriff Department discriminating the minority groups such as the Latino, many people came to the defense of Arpaio. These people were concerned by the increase in the number of immigrants in the region.
Members of the Latino community, therefore, had a rough time, trying to fight for their rights since they could not even trust the police officers. It took heroes such as Lacey and Larkin to sacrifice themselves so their people would be free from discrimination. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter and Michael Lacey | Twitter
The pardoning of Arpaio by President Donald Trump was, therefore, a thorn in the flesh of the Latinos and other immigrants. He may have been pardoned because of his support throughout the campaign of Donald Trump, even when everyone thought he would not make it up to the State House.
One of the leading organization nationally in the fight for the Latinos right is led by Lacey and Larkin. It was formed together with other organizations to respond to the cases of mistreatment by Arpaio. The organization is known as Frontera Fund.
Lacey and Larkin are an inspiration to many people. To the Latinos, they are heroes. They encourage people to go against all the odds, to fight for what they believe is fair to all.
